A Comic, Anime, and Cosplay Convention in Montgomery County, Maryland featuring media screenings, seminars, contests, cosplay, vendors, and more!
(formerly MonkeyCon) Risu means squirrel in Japanese. Japan is the source of so much of our fandom and inspiration, and… there are a LOT of squirrels in Maryland.
Saturday and Sunday August 17 & 18, 2024 at the Montgomery County Conference Center
You might know local artist Rafer Roberts (aka @plasticfarm) from his super creepy Nightmare the Rat series in Magic Bullet, or from that “Thanos & Darkseid: Carpool Buddies of Doom” comic he did, or from his backup stories in Shutter, Tiger Lawyer and otherwise. But now he’s writing Archer & Armstrong! He’ll be leading one of our Comix Workshops this month as part of a signing here at Fantom on March 26–be there.
In a world dominated by burly superheroes staring at each other waaaay too closely, it’s really nice to have a hero that enjoys eating pizza, rocking hot lipstick and being silly. After a ridiculously long wait, the complete collected edition of Madeleine Flores’ Help Us! Great Warrior is finally available from Boom, so come scoop it up this week!
Maika’s dangerous journey continues as she searches for answers about her mother and the monster within herself. Inquisitrixes are still hot on her tail and tensions are high. Danger is always around the corner for this arcanic girl and her companions. The first arc of this epic fantasy is slowly coming to an end AND THERE’S STILL SO MUCH TO FIND OUT.
The impending release of this vol. 2 made us realize we’ve never done a Gotham Academy book club! So we’re fixing that by doing one on April 17. DOOO IT. If you haven’t checked out this super underrated “Hogwarts in Gotham” teen mystery series yet, we’ve got vol. 1 at the store.
This innovative new anthology series spearheaded by IDW workhorses Ulises Fariñas and Erick Freitas is catching our attention again with issue #3 because it features work by local DC-based artist (and Fantom subscriber!) @austinbreed. Check ittt
“So, we felt like doing something awesome for February,
so in honor of Black History Month we’re holding book clubs and events
that shine some light on some of our favorite titles and how they(and
the industry at large) portray and address issues pertaining to being
black in this society:
2/4 - Miles Morales: Spider-Man 2/11 - Princeless 2/18 - Shaft Vol.1 & Shaft: Imitation of Life #1 2/22 - Fantom Discourse: Afrofuturism - What If Wakanda Existed? 2/25 - Power Man & Iron Fist
Be it a black character or black creator, we feel these titles exemplify the month’s theme: Black Excellence in Comics.
