SPX '07 Gems: "Richard's Poor Almanac"

I love the work of Richard Thompson, a D.C. area cartoonist who often lampoons all things D.C. in his strip "Richard's Poor Almanac." It runs weekly in the Washington Post Magazine. I finally got to meet Thompson at the Small Press Expo and we traded books--I gave him Mr. Big and he gave me a trade compiling his strip. (I definitely felt I got the better end of the deal!) Whether your from the D.C. area or not, you'll appreciate Thompson's witty bites in this book. It had me rolling with laughter on the subway (I read my comics on the Metro to and from work.) I especially like his jabs at local county fairs (seems like every county in the area holds one at least, what, four times a year?) and his "Restaurant Closings," that feature eatery mishaps. I highly recommend this gem ($15, 160 pages, www.emmisbooks.com/humor).

If you like RPA, you oughta check out Thompson's daily strip Cul de Sac.

Damn, that's good, Bram! You are the rector in the Church of Thompson!

The unfortunate thing, I think, is that the book is really just his DC-area-themed cartoons. Lot of other good stuff left out.

Even more inexplicable was the lack of publicity in the DC area (at least before I left) for it.
