Dr. Sketchy
![]()
So last night, I ventured out to H Street in NE to what I believed was a strip club. It was just a bar. The event held at the Palace of Wonders (sounded like a strip club to me) was Dr. Sketchy. What that venue is, is supposed to be a a merging of cabaret meets artschool. I always associated cabaret with stripping, and maybe I was wrong on that behalf. Though the model was dressed provocatively, and Molly Crabapple the one running the venue, had mentioned that she used to be a stripper in her introduction, there was no stripping. Well... there was in the beginning, but the model had nipple covers. It was interesting enough though and I have no real gripes. I had a beer or three in one hand and my pen the other and a sketchbook on my lap. I always wanted to go to a bar and bring my sketchbook. That in itself felt like I had accomplished one of my life's goals.
I think personally that Dr. Sketchy was a success. Some of the other DCC members who said they were going to go ended up busy that night, as it was a Tuesday night. When I was leaving I had said farewell to some of the people I met at the bar, to be polite. I was surprised when Molly greeted me farewell also. I didn't really expect that and it threw me off guard that I probably seemed uninterested or rude. Regardless though, if they come back around through DC, I'll defiantly attend their next venue. Though, I hear that Molly will be stripping somewhere in Dupont or Adam's Morgan, though, I don't know if that is another drawing session or just stripping per say.
It's been a long time since I last had an drawing session with a model. I always saw on Craigslist that there is a group of artists who hires nude models and would have scheduled drawing sessions. It makes me long for those lost days of college that I took for granted. And as I left, I was approached by a homeless man who probably wanted some change. I ignored him and continued to walk to my car, hoping the windows weren't smashed in.
