Stumptown aftermath!
So, Stumptown 2006 is all done, and I guess it went pretty well. We made a ton of contacts with local and national artists, writers, and even a few publishers. And it was fun to see all the cool stuff, of course.
Shear Terror was by far the most popular subject of discussion at the table, what with Halloween coming up and all, and it was also the biggest seller-- we moved 9 copies! Second place goes to our little Totally Not Vegan booklets, of which 7 sold. Dremo 1 and 2 (we pretty much only sold them in pairs) sold 6 copies, and 4 copies of Mr. Big were sold-- thanks Matt for keeping our half table from looking too bare. We unfortunately didn't keep track of trades, but toward the end some fairly brisk trading went on. I think we sold twice as many items as we would have, had Kate not been very vocal in saying hello to pretty much every passerby. We were in an absolutely awful location, at an isolated table right next to the entrance to the 'event' area. It sounds great since everyone had to walk past us to get to the events, but they walked past very fast. Most of the superstar tables were on the other side of the big room.
The show was Friday evening and Saturday night. Friday was busier than we expected, and then Saturday was a little lighter than we had thought. Since this is the show's first year in a huge location (the Oregon Convention Center), I think it's a case of the show not quite catching up with the size of the venue. Plus, as several people at the show pointed out, the media sponsor (Willamette Week, a local paper) hardly advertised the show at all.
But overall it was a fun time. We met up with a few prospective local participants in a DCC-esque organization, so even more good may come of it. Kate and I learned many lessons of what works and doesn't work, and I think next time we do a show it will be even better.
EDIT: Since I'm a dummy at blogging, here is a link to the photo of our table on Flickr, in case it doesn't appear above.

hey Chris and Kate!
good to hear about how things are going out west for you! I feel you about show location. When we were at the Phoenix con in Sept, all the small press/artist alley people were moved out of the main floor, and we were strewn about in various hallways and lobbies. You're right, people don't really slow down. Sounds like you did pretty good on sales, though.
Hey, send me a file for your blog icon/about page profile. And some profile text. But a pic first. at least 150 x 105 pix. You can email me at m [underscore] meehan [at] mindspring [dot] com

I'm glad to see the Dremo books arrived! Whew! Great work under pressure, Kate.
I bet Stumptown is a show that will grow. It's funny to see a lot of the same faces from SPX, which wasn't so long along. These folks are truly stumpers!

Glad to hear you moved all those books! Your table looks really good. I love the robot standup thing. Very cool.

Robot Chris free-handed that robot directly on the foam core and cut it out like an hour before the show. It turned out amazing. I also especially like our blue check table cloth.
Stumptown started the year before last as like 20 tables at a church-- so it is really growing!
We were stapling at and folding the Dremos the show. In between errands and getting tot he show we checked back at the house to finally find that the FedEx package with the Dremos had come. Hurray!
