Win Some, Lose...Er...All?
Well, the Elk's Run team got taken down a couple of pegs this weekend. Seven Harvey Nominations - Zero Wins.
We weren’t expecting to win anything, really. “It’s an honor to be nominated.” But at the Baltimore show everyone was coming to our table and saying, “You guys are totally going to win,” and, well, you start believing it.
The awards dinner was nice. Cocktail hour with all the free crackers, crab dip, and cheeses we could eat. Sit down dinner consisted of salad, crab balls, chicken and veggies – an amazing little desert. Then the awards started.
We lost Best Writer, Best Artist, Best Single Issue (#3), Best New Talent (Josh Fialkov), Best Limited Series, Best Cover Artist, and Best Letterer. To add insult to injury, when reading off the Best Writer nominees, Howard Chaykin says, “Joshua…Fee…Fee-al…This guy better change his name or he’ll never make it in comics.”
By the end of the night we were a little let-down. We had drinks with the Archaia Studio Press guys – A. David Lewis and the rest of the L&LS crew (they lost three Harvey Noms and it’s shame, it’s one of the best books put out last year), David Petersen from Mouse Guard watched us bitch and likely wondered what’ll happen to his book next year, Mark Smylie, one of the best new publishers in comics, probably brushing it off but consoling us none-the-less. We toasted to making the best comics on the market, had a couple of drinks, and went to bed early.
The Sunday after the ceremony Josh and I arrived to the convention center about two-and-a-half hours late. People were coming up to us and offering condolences. We were making light of it. “Forrest Gump beat both Pulp Fiction and Shawshank Redemption for Best Picture.”
But, really, when it comes down to it – Seven Nominations for an award voted on by industry pros isn’t that bad. In March our book will be collected and published by Random House, the largest publisher in America (maybe the world, not sure). So, you may win some and you may lose some but if your wins greatly outweigh your losses, you’re not doing all that bad.
Just keep that in mind.
