Here's an interesting article in Publisher's Weekly on whether new comic companies can succeed.

what I would say is that this article proves something that I have felt was true. Start small. I think the problem with speakeasy's business model was that they did too much too fast. You don't need to jump out of the starting gate with ten books a month, trying to grab a big piece of the tiny percentage of market share that independant comics make up.
I think that Boom really reperesents a good model to follow. Publish two books, let it go a year. Then pick up a couple more depending on how things go. You're not trying to set the world on fire, you're just trying to build something stable.

right on, jake. i'm really surprised about speakeasy, though, given that fella's experience in the business. you'd think he'd know better than to spread themselves too thin...
