The Small Presser, No. 12: "Salvage"
My eight-page submission for the 2004 SPX Anthology didn't get in. Drat.
I suspected I didn't make the cut since I didn't hear anything from the editors, and SPX was about a month away. (I got in last year, and the editors informed us about six weeks out.) But I decided prior to the annoucement that even if the piece didn't get in, it would be at SPX somehow!
So I'm making that story into its own mini. It'll have a title page and a two-color silkscreen cover.
My point is this: Don't get discouraged because you didn't make it into SPX's flagship book (or any anthology, for that matter). In fact, rev yourself up and repackage that submission into a little book to sell at the next show.
Eight pages may seem a bit thin for a book, but you can make it sexy. Add some bells and whistles (like a silkscreen cover, or play with the book size) and price it right (I'll be selling my book, "Coexistence," for 50 cents), and you might have a little firecracker in your hands! Use that energy to make folks say, "Damn, I can't believe this didn't get into the anthology!"

I talked to Jeff about what we could do with our 8 page rejected SPX story. The whole concept was that it was a primer for our book "The Alberic Heresies" set to debut at SPACE in May. We talked about maybe just putting it together as an ashcan to hand out, or sell for 50 cents or something, but I think what we're going to do is hang on to it and when we're ready to put out a collected volume of the book we can add this in as "Never before seen pages!"
on another note, this is the second time I've been rejected by the SPX anthology. I don't think there will be a third time... grrrrrrr!

That's a good idea: fresh material included in the collected trade.
What about a simple four-page, give away teaser to give away at SPX? Just one folded 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper with a B&W version of the cover (which is simply lovely), two inside pages from book one, and contact info on the back (how to reach you or Jeff, when and where the book will premiere, who's yer daddy, etc.)
