The Small Presser, No. 5: "Maximum Exposure"

I’m heading to the Philadelphia Zine Fest this weekend. Zine fests are different from small-press shows, but they have potential to reach a different audience. Which brings me to the subject of this week’s column: Take advantage of any opportunity to pimp your work. For example, the Philadelphia Weekly will be running an article this week about the zine fest and the show organizers asked exhibitors to send in covers from their books to appear in the piece. The fest is also being held in an art gallery-like facility, and the folks who run it asked exhibitors to send in some of their art to put up at the gallery. It’d be foolish to pass up exposure like this. So if you’re going to a show, keep your ears open for ways to get your work out there. At SPACE, for example, organizer Bob Corby publishes a program for the event and always asks folks to send him artwork to include in it. And if you’re debuting a comic at the show, Bob will list it along with an image of the cover at his Web page a few weeks before the show. Another example: SPX’s Ignatz Awards have a category called Best Debut Comic. The listed books not only get mentioned in the show program, but also often get a short write-up at some comic Web sites.
