Graphic Novels For Summer Reading

CNN.com has seen fit to include two graphic novels at the end of its selection of summer reading — a new release by Dan Clowes, and more collected Acme from Chris Ware.

I think I'll be playing catch-up this summer - some Dan Clowes my friend Chris lent me and try to get into a book everyone says I should be into (too many to list).

At the same time I think it's time to cut down on the weeklies and start reading more books again. I'm reading THE HOT KID and this biography on Joe DiMaggio simultaneously and remembering how much better a book is.

Taking a break from reading too many comics, is that a bad thing?

Books without pictures? Been a long time, but the library here in Santa Fe doesn't have the graphic novel collection that Arlington had.

I've made a poor decision or two in the past few books I've read, but on the drive out, read Steinbeck's Travels With Charley at a friend's recommendation. Just marvelous, a quick, entertaining read — some of his 40-year-old observations still stand; and, it made me want to go on a road trip (and I was already on one).

I just read Ice Haven from Daniel Clowes. Be-yoot-if-ul.

I bought Ice Haven from Amazon sight unseen and I was a little disappointed that it didn't have more new material. I loved the book format, but I felt a little ripped-off that I paid $18 for a book that I already had (for the most part) that had cost me $6 three years ago. Not that I didn't like the book. I did. A lot. Had I known that 90% of it was from Eightball #22, I still would have bought it.
