Today in The Examiner

I was really happy this morning to see that the two featured comics in the "Pulp Fiction" section of today's Examiner are independant books. Marvel and DC get some of their books reviewed, and Dark Horse gets a mention in regards to an upcoming Hellboy comic, but the focus is definitely set squarely on Speakeasy Comics(http://www.speakeasycomics.com) new books

"Atomika"
ATOMIKA!!

and "Grimoire"
GRIMOIRE!!

Anyway, Atomika is about a russian super hero set in the 20's in Moscow. The Grimoire is about a modern day female magician who has a connection with nature. Rad, she can talk to animals. Speakeasy is a relatively new company, but looking through the books that they are currently publishing I think shows a degree of quality that I think is pretty suprising. Anyway, I thought these covers were beautiful, and I thought I'd share. Hope you all enjoy!

I believe the first one is Alex Ross, correct?

Speakeasy marketed Atomeka so well, I pre-ordered one and I don't know the writer, the company, the interior's artist and really don't have a huge interest in the subject material. They just marketed the hell out of that book and I had to take my hat off to them and order a copy.

In retrospect, I just realized I claimed they marketed it well and yet I don't know anyone's name attached.

In my defense I pre-ordered it 2 months ago. So they did some nice short-term marketing, at least.

Picked up my copy of Atomika yesterday at Big Planet (not out on the racks -- when I asked, they pulled one off a pile by the checkout; don't know if they're out or what).

And I liked it, certainly enough to see where it's going. The art's interesting, slightly more European-ish maybe, with a strong sense of layout. The story reminds me a bit of The Red Star, blending a the supernatural and the idea of "Russia-ness."
