James Sturm diary

Slate Posted by Hello

Slate has an online diary feature that's often written by cartoonists. This week it is James Sturm, the man behind the NACAE---he's put together a great resource for teaching comics and has started a school in Vermont that offers courses beginning in Fall 2005. He's also a great talent, best known for Golem's Mighty Swing.

Check out the diary all week long. And if you have time, go back in the archives to read Adrian Tomine's and Ben Katchor's entries, among others. The diaries go back a long way, so this might be a long, fun read for you in your spare time. Bookmark it.

That school is very expensive. Do they honestly think aspiring CARTOONISTS can afford it?

Yeah, think how many small press comics you could print for that?!

At the Smithsonian lecture someone asked Paul Pope what art school he would reccomend for aspiring comic artists. Paul basically said that he feels a liberal arts education with an art concentration is a much better route, citing that people need to know more about the world in order to appreciate art and sort of hinting at the fact that talent can't be tought, only honed.

He had some interesting insights on a lot of things.

True. But most of what I learned about making comics took twelve years to learn, like:

-ink your letters before your pictures

-you can make pages any size you want

-paper matters

-make sure everything is spelled R*I*T*E, er, write...uh, RIGHT.

Anyone want to add?

I'm not necessarily agreeing with Paul, just playing devil's advocate for the purpose of discussion.
