East Meets West (with pics)

I went out to LA for the insanely loud and crowded Wizard World, representing Hoarse & Buggy as we premiered Elk’s Run and continued to push Western Tales of Terror. It was good times; we were flanked on both sides by SSS Comics and Ape Entertainment, two top notch companies. Ape is east coast as well and will potentially be representing at SPX. One of the founders, David Hedgecock, has worked with the DCC’s Matt Dembicki in the past on when they both were in the United Fanzine Organization (UFO). Saul Colt of SSS Comics has a story in Western Tales #4 illustrated by the insanely talented Joseph Bergin III and he has been an extremely vocal supporter of H&B.

We even had two ex-Virginians signing at our table, Steve Niles of 30 Days of Night fame, soon to have his Batman mini hitting the stands, and Todd Livingston of the award winning Wicked West and Black Forest. Back east, however, Steve was playing for Grey Matter and Todd was a stand-up comedian. They both ended up in LA making award winning comics. In addition to Todd and Steve we had California natives Dan Taylor (Hero Happy Hour) and Marco Magallanes (soon to be in everything you read) signing for us. Marco was even nice enough to give me this sketch.

All in all a good but tiring show. I covered two panels for Comicon’s Pulse, the Fantastic Four Movie panel which was the hype machine we all would expect and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund panel, probably the most important panel of the convention to which a whopping 10 people showed up. For shame comic fans, for shame. As far as H&B went, we moved a lot of books; discounted Elk’s Run to a dollar on Sunday and then gave away a whole bunch of them in the last hour. Hopefully everyone who got a copy enjoyed it and will remember to pre-order #2 in April’s previews (I occasionally slip into “promotional machine” mode, apologies).

I didn’t get to walk around as much I usually liked and I only got to do a single pass down artist’s alley, which kind of stinks. There where some really good artists there but my schmoozing was limited, since I was hustling non-stop back at the table.

And, of course, some pictures. Click the descriptions to see the pics. We don’t have the day two pictures up yet, for some reason, which are probably the best pictures (including some that prove I was actually AT the con. Whatever).

Friday:
1 - Josh (EIC) and Chris (Publisher) setting up the H&B booth.
2 - Jamie Dee Galey (cartoonist) and Josh setting up the H&B booth.
3 - Our banners.
4 - Elk's Run display
5 - Bendis says...
6 - Western Tales of Terror display.
7 - One of our neighbors, Saul Colt.
8 - Across the aisle we had Lion's Gate Films (the loudest booth at the con!)
9 - IDW's booth (aka the house that Niles built)
10 - Dan Taylor signing.
11 - A happy buyer.

Saturday (soon):

Sunday:
1 - Todd Livingston loves you.
2 - Another Marco gift.
3 - The crowds...
4 - ...were not at our table.
5 - But we went through a lot books.
6 - Josh and I (Mets’ hat), going home.

Livingstone does "Black Forest." Check out the link. It's mighty kick-ass horror! Damn, it looks good!

I find Wicked West to be equally good. I love Vokes' art and Keating does amazing colors (he colored Elk's Run).

re: crowd shot

Why does there always have to be a couple wearing Batman and Superman shirts? It's definitely that deja vu all over again feeling looking at that pic...

De ja vu, Deb? Did you use to go to cons in a batgirl costume?
